Assistant Professor of Graphic Design/Visual Communication

Starting Date:
August, 2022

Minimum Qualifications:
1) An earned MFA, or equivalent degree, with an emphasis in Communication Design or a related field, from an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required at the time of application.
2) Evidence of practical knowledge, experience, and skill in contemporary Communication Design;
3) Evidence of successful professional practice in design;
4) Evidence of successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level.

Preferred Qualifications:
1) Experience in any of the following: design history, theory or criticism, environmental graphic design, human-centered design, information design, interaction design, service design, typographic design, user experience design;
2) Evidence of successful teaching experience at the graduate level;
3) Experience with curriculum development;
4) Experience with community engagement partnership or project development.

Duties:
The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities generally include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.

The successful candidate will support our students in developing projects with purpose as part of a socially and culturally engaged college and will teach undergraduate and graduate students in the BA-Art, Graphic Design/Visual Communication, and MA/MFA Design programs.

As a member of the faculty, the successful candidate will also actively participate in the continued development of the art and design programs.

Salary:
Initial salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Department:
The Department of Art offers the Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees; over 775 majors are currently enrolled, more than 200 of which are GD/VC students. The Department is the largest in the College, and Art is the fifth largest major in the University. There are fifteen full-time faculty and 42 lecturers. Cal State LA has maintained NASAD accreditation since 1974.
